Webster Park Spring Recap & Mid-Summer Update

In April, the plants at the triangle entrance were replaced with ferns by the Parks Dept. They look wonderful and are thriving in the cool, wet weather!

Webster Park was Groundswell NW's "Park of the Month" in May. Here is a link to an article:

By the time June rolled around, while the sun wasn't necessarily out very often, the longer days persuaded the trees to leaf out and the plants began to take off! Much of the weeding and mulching from the Oct. 2010 work party paid off: Weeds are being kept down.

This month and into August, the sculpture wall artwork is being restored. The paint was accidentally damaged (due to pressure washing) last year. Through many phones calls and emails, Lillian Riley was able to secure both maintenance budget funds and privately donated funds to repair and restore the artwork. The artist and park space designer, Charles Bigger, is onsite doing the work. So, if you see a fellow working on the artwork, ask him if he's Charlie and introduce yourself -- and thank him for envisioning such a wonderful park!

In late July, the port-a-potty near the blacktop/basketball hoops was destroyed. It appears to have been lit on fire. The parks department was notified and they promptly had it removed. I don't have any information on a replacement.

How Webster Park Came to Be

Webster Park, a .8-acre park which came into existence at the instigation of the Ballard community, was built on the site of the former Webster Elementary School. The park was built in 1997 after community members and a grassroots organization took up the cause of promoting increased open space in the Ballard area. Parks leased the site from the Seattle School District.

Seattle Parks purchased the land on March 18, 2009 for $1.6 million.
